"Service-learning is education in action, developing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, taking on societal issues such as hunger, homelessness, and diversity, and valuing people of all ages as citizens with talents to offer." (www.nylc.org)
Courses with a service-learning component may be some of the most meaningful courses of your academic career. These courses offer you a chance to apply your conceptual knowledge to a real-work situation and see first-hand how your education will better prepare you to improve your community and our world.
Service-learning courses give you the opportunity to take what you've learned in the classroom and apply it to make a difference. Service-learning provides opportunities to help develop leadership skills, foster professional development, appreciate diversity, and provide opportunities for increased understanding of course material.
