SUNY Buffalo State hopes to create long-term, meaningful partnerships with community agencies through service-learning, volunteering, and other experiential opportunities for students. These partnerships, designed to benefit both the students and the community, are the result of an increasing understanding nationwide that higher education institutions have a responsibility to the communities in which they are located. Students benefit from these experiential learning opportunities; communities benefit from the knowledge and assistance of student learners; and classroom curricula can come to life through student contact with the knowledge, experience, and expertise in the adjoining community. Service-learning is an important and growing movement in civic engagement and education at SUNY Buffalo State.
How the Civic and Community Engagement Office can help:
-
Identify students who share your organization’s mission.
-
Connect with periodic and one-time student volunteers through events, including Bengals Dare to Care community service day and Alternative Break.
-
Update your current volunteer opportunities in our electronic volunteer posting database known as BengalLink.
-
Connect with faculty who are looking for partnerships in their service-learning courses.
How Community Partners can help:
-
Partner with a service-learning course to link classroom learning with community priorities.
-
Provide students with opportunities to gain skills and support your organization in tutoring, advertising, dance, problem-solving, education, and much more.
-
Support an effective strategy for enhancing student learning, improving the educational experience, and fostering civic engagement.
